Outdoor shopping – Kasi Style

January 5, 2013

Whether you’re in Meadowlands (Gauteng) or Khayelitsha (Western Cape), the outdoor community shopping experience is coming to a township community near you in a big way during 2013 and its a trend worth following.

Outdoor “weekend” flea markets are fast becoming popular in peri-urban communities in Gauteng and the Western Cape.

By supporting these markets, communities support home (craft) industries and local entrepreneurs, people who in some cases are their neighbours.

The growth of the weekend flea market is also significant for being a catalyst for much needed economic activity in communities with high levels of unemployment. Although the impact on job creation is marginal, these markets give hope to subsistence or survivalist craft businesses, entertainers and garage sale pundits.

The Kasi Economist will continue to monitor this trend, we just wish more urban organic gardeners would sell fresh produce to encourage healthy lifestyle habits. KE
