Waves for Change coaches Soso and Lethu have been selected to take part in the Laureus YES Young Leader programme for 2013. The programme is an intensive course for the top young leaders from Sport for Development organisations from across South Africa.

Soso and Lethu are two of the young Waves for Change coaches from the Waves for Change Surfing Centre situated at Monwabisi Beach, Khayelitsha. As Cape Town’s biggest township, the centre serves as a staging point to bring surfing to the community for the first time and to run skills training, HIV education, community building and nutrition programmes. The centre is run by a crew of 6 of Khayelithsa’s first ever surfers and we’re stoked to see Soso and Lethu recognised as leading youth leaders from SA and being selected for the programme.

They’ll be flying up to Durban next month to begin and we look forward to sharing more of their successes in the future.

Wave for Change (W4C) is designed to be implemented by coaches from developing communities who are trained and up-skilled appropriately to use surfing as a tool to engage hard to reach young adults in South Africa’s poorest and most dangerous communities.
