‘iKasi Experience’ a showcase for township entrepreneurs

November 10, 2013

Cape Town’s Khayelitsha township came alive with culture on Saturday during the Ikasi Experience, which aims to expose the talents of township entrepreneurs.

It is the third year the event is being held, drawing people from all walks of life to experience the township’s flair.

The idea was born from the desire to create a cultural and entrepreneurial hub in the townships.

“Basically what Ikasi Experience is all about is celebrating what the township is all about, celebrating the entrepreneurial spirit of the township, and also celebrating all the talent that comes from the township,” said co-founder Loyiso Mdebuka.

Mdebuka hopes to spread the idea across the country. “There’s a township in every part of the country. There are talented people who need the platform. There are entrepreneurs who need to be given a formal place where they can actually sell their goods and services.”

Vendors here say that they could not have asked for a better platform.

“We get the opportunity to meet other young entrepreneurs out there and it also keeps us abreast as to what’s happening out there, and it also keeps us innovative,” said entrepreneur Gcobisa Maqanda.

For those whose businesses have already taken off, they remain true to their roots and the Ikasi Experience.

“This is where I came from, you know what I mean? So as much as my business has developed into servicing corporate clients and big businesses, this is where I came from,” said Daniel Thebe of Isidima Brands Multimedia.
