Cape Metro Council has allocated more than R1-billion to upgrade apartheid-era housing in townships

January 9, 2014

Councillor Thandeka Gqada, responsible for human settlements, announced yesterday that the council had approved R1.2-billion for seven housing projects over the next four years.

The city plans to renovate about 15000 hostel units in Langa, Gugulethu and Nyanga, and will spend R600-million on improving the living conditions of backyard and shack dwellers.

Western Cape human settlements MEC Bonginkosi Madikizela said the province’s housing efforts were being hindered by “opportunistic” community leaders who incited residents to destroy government housing.
