Giving ICT knowledge to children for brighter future

January 13, 2014

“Catch them while they are young.” So goes an old saying and this has prompted an IT entrepreneur to cast his focus on young children.

Khayelitsha native and owner of Mbele Social Concepts (MSC), Sibongile Mbele, has combined his passion for computers and uplifting others into a business concept.

“I discovered that children from the townships were being left out in matters pertaining to computers and technology and saw this a a challenge we can combat,” said Mbele.

He launched a flagship programme, Computers4Kids, providing Information Technology education and training children in the Langa, Nyanga, Gugulethu and Khayelitsha areas.

“Children really enjoy playing around with computers and their grasp is amazingly high,” he said.

Mbele said in today’s world “technology is just like water,” a necessity you can’t do without.

“ We facilitate this education and training through computer literacy and encouraging computer programming concepts through the technology industry,” he enthused.

Recently his business was endorsed by the Khayelitsha Community Trust (KCT). He also went to Britain for two weeks as part young South African entrepreneurs’ exchange programme.

He said their curriculum is endorsed and accredited by ECDL and ICDL foundation and MICT-Seta with regards to rules, standards and guidelines in the ICT industry.

“We pride ourselves to inspire, empower and uplift our communities to create a brighter and better South Africa through ICT,” he added.

Mbele said their struggle to “bridge the digital divide in our communities” is non-stop.

“We want to build a sold reputation of being the community’s first choice in IT education and training, by continually improving our value,” he said.

“We are levelling the playing field for the township kid as he has surely missed the head start,” Mbele said.

He said they are also helping local organisations to boost their tech savviness.

Having been exposed to ICT at an early age, Mbele has embarked on a humbling journey through MSC to ensure that most children from disadvantaged schools and communities get this opportunity and more in order to pave for a brighter future.

Mbele has worked for leading insurance, software, retail and banking organisations here and abroad on number of assignments including Programming both Web-based and Mainframe, Systems Analysis, Business Analysis, Risk Analysis, CVM Capability Specialist and Project Management.

He is also extensively involved in community based projects on environmental activism and awareness. MSC is biased towards the disadvantaged communities and schools in all their programmes, as the founding member also comes from this background.

Mbele’s aim is to see children in these communities comfortable and knowledgeable about computer usage and understanding, thus bringing remarkable difference and impact in their lives.
