Budget speech 2014 – what it would take to eradicate a “poor” state of mind

February 26, 2014

When you think about it, POVERTY is both a phase and a state of mind – we’ve all heard of a “rags to riches” stories (my personal favorite being that of Chippa Mpengesi).

But in South Africa, the government creates an entrenched state of poverty through a dependency on social spending and a lack of investment into economic enabling infrastructure where the poor live (our townships)!

In my experience, the expectations of middle class South Africans of the budget speech change every year…this being the 21st budget budget speech, I would like to see a difference. There are communities in this country that have been poor for 20 years and will remain poor unless we improve infrastructure investment to respond to the economic and public service needs!
